Run your Mac Updates so that you are running 10.6.8. After you get to that point then you should be able to get the lastest version of iTunes.
Go to the Apple Menu
You may need to run multiple rounds of this to not only get to 10.6.8, but also to get the latest version of iTunes. You may not see the latest iTunes update it with the 10.6.8 software update, that is normal.

Okay i've done that a couple times now and then i opened itunes and then went to check for updates under the itunes drop-down and then this pops up:
iTunes can’t verify the identity of the server “ax.itunes.apple.com”.
The certificate for this server is invalid. You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be “ax.itunes.apple.com”, which could put your confidential information at risk. Would you like to connect to the server anyway?
and then i click continue and it says
The iTunes update server could not be contacted. Please check your Internet connection, or try again later.

Check your security software if any.
You can also go directly to apple.com/itunes and attempt a download from there and install it over your recent version. It will not erase any iTunes data on the computer and will update the version of iTunes. I think I had to do it that way for the most recent release.

I have been getting those to pop up randomlly when using iTunes. I have email iTunes already for assitance. If sdpitbulls reccomnedation does not fix the issue then I would reccomend contacting iTunes support.
