You may need to authorize your audible account for this computer. To do so, click Store > Authorize audible account.

Many thanks! It turned out that the files I needed had been downloaded when I had a now-defunct Audible.com user name and password, and all that had to be resurrected. I will use those links, to become more familiar with these issues.
