I can't get my keyboard to type my password. I have put new batteries no response. My first letter is a capital and nothing happens . When I type any other letter at random it seems to work. Do I need a new keyboard? Thanks for any other suggestion to make the capital touch work.

Where are you trying to type your password? If it's in Terminal, note that UNIX-based systems automatically hide the password so nobody can see it, even if you are typing it. This is normal, so just type your password and press the Return key

When I initially turn my computer on and log in , the keyboard does not respond to my typing my log in password and yet in the same time it seems to randomly type a lot of dots without any prompting.

Those dots appear in order to hide your password or whatever you typed. When you turn on your iMac, your Bluetooth keyboard has to connect to your iMac. After being connected, you will be able to type your password, and you will see dots

Quite! At last someone on the ball. But all the same it was useful as luckily my guest user login does not request a password so I did manage to set up the on screen keyboard. Thanks every one for the help. My new keyboard is due to arrive any day now as it is obviously caput.
