Try This :
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data > Switch "Push" On
And Set the frequency the least.

Occasionally, it seems that email settings in iOS just stops working rellably.
You can try resetting your iPad and this just might solve the problem,Reset your iPad by pressing the 'Sleep' and 'Home' button at the same time for about 15 seconds or so. Your iPad will then go through a reset / reboot procedure and will be ready for use within about a minute.
Don't worry about doing this as you will not lose data or settings.
if this does not work, then go take a note of your email settings,
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calender > Account Name > and take a note of all the settings there.
then delete the account and then set it up again as a new account.
I know that this can be a nuisance but it should fix the problem.
