Not working is NOT hardware failure, get your facts right.

"Correlation" is the correct word to epxlain this common logical fallacy.

Meg is correct. She is referring to the logical fallacy known as Post hoc ergo propter hoc.

I'd agree if I'd said for definite that it had caused the problem but I didn't.

Yes, the events - upgrade, not working - co-incided.

Is there a correlation between the 2 events...yes, somewhere between -1 and +1 if we're using statistics.

Did the upgrade cause the "not working" unknown.

Is there enough evidence to investigate this possibility?  Yes, given the chatter on various news boards, imho. No, if you're Apple :-)

The fact that "correlation does not mean causality" does not rule out the possiblity that it is true.

I do think though that when someone asks for help that the intent of the question be addressed by the helper rather than focus on whether the helpee has used precisely the right wording; and for the helper to:

    1) check whether their reply addresses the original question

    2) is a helpful comment

    3) asks for clarification

    4) have read any other postings by the helpee to elaborate in response to previous questions.

You've been given the steps that should be taken to troubleshoot the problem. If none of those fixed it, then you're going to have to hunt down a competent 3rd party repair shop and have them look at it as you have rendered the phone unsupportable by Apple.

ckuan:  It certainly can/has/will if not properly programmed.

KiltedTom: I didn't ask for steps to troubleshoot, please see i) my original question and ii) my list of activities the helper should have performed to ensure their response is helpful.

    Your question was answered.

In case you missed it, the answer is NO. You can not downgrade, either with or without iTunes.

KiltedTim: I didn't miss any of the answers.  I know I can downgrade via iTunes, I've done it before - "download required iOS version; open iTunes, select my device, and option+click (shift+click in Windows) on the Restore button;  point to the firmware downloaded" and Bob's my uncle.

You're a "Level 7", which I assume means people think you've helped a lot and are therefore knowledgeable, so I would expect you to know this.  Please don't tell me this isn't supported by Apple and therefore you equate that to the phrase "can not".  I didn't ask if it was supported or not.

I thought that I was asking a question of a forum that had good knowledge of the darker secrets of iPhones and expected either a "Sorry mate, you can't, it always has to be done through iTunes on your computer, not even the Apple Cloud facility can help."; or "yes, sure can bud, go here xxx and follow the steps".

Instead I get a set of answers to questions I hadn't asked; told off for not being pedantic enough or given a set of statements that are incorrect.

Then you violated the EULA for the phone and iOS and forfeited all rights to support either directly from Apple or on these forums.

And you presumably can read, and having agreed to the terms of service for these forums, are fully aware that that's considered hacking and can not be discussed here at all.

Then you made an incorrect assumption. You asked a question on a forum that is owned by Apple. What you are attempting to do can not be discussed here. Full stop.

If you want information on hacking the phone, then go somewhere else.

Much as you might not like to hear it, KiltenTim is correct. There is no legitiamate way to downgrade. The only way is through a hack that Apple prohibits in the iPhone and iTunes EULA.

Thanks Alfred. If that's the answer then that's the answer, I don't mind hearing it.  I do find it strange though, that iTunes provides the ability to downgrade and yet it's considered a hack if you use it.

    You're welcome.

As for iTunes ability to downgrade - it really doesn't allow it. You may see the .ipsw file available, but if you tried to install it, you would get an error. The hack I was referring to is jailbreaking, not iTunes.
