i need to search for .dwg files that i cannot find but believe i created in the last three months.

for some reason i am not googling to the right place on how to do this best.

can anyone advise as to whether i can just /add/ this file type or if simply putting in ".dwg" or "?dwg" or something else is best for this?

also, any advice on finding a file that i /think/ i created but may have modified (?) in the last year? i mean, i know i worked on something which would have ORIGINALLY been opened as another file (i made changes to this file) but for the life of me i don't remember the name of this file or whether i renamed it or whatever so i don't know whether to search as modified or created or whatever.

TIA

Add File Extension to the list of search attributes

    then

As for finding a file in the last year; without more attributes there is no way to narrow it down. THe type of file would be a good place to start.

    hi frank.

thank you. i have tried to read up on this tool as i would really like to be able to use it with more power.

however, i seem to be having issues on both the macbook pro and the macpro.

right now i am on the macbook pro. i have put a "t" in spotlight and then i click "show in finder". then i click the little plus symbol and then i click on "other" and i add "file extension".

then i select "file extension" and i put in "dwg" and i am seeing all kinds of results including pdfs and other file types.

can you tell if i am doing something wrong because i would not expect any results in here that do not have a dwg as a file extension.

    THANKS

Try this, instead of starting in Spotlight open a Finder window and type command-F, that will turn the Finder window into a Finde search window. Now go to the Kind pulldown and select File Extension and enter dwg.

That should at least narrow your initial list of files to dwg types.

See if that at least gets you in the ballpark, post back if you need to refine the list even more.

    good luck

    hi frank.

i think the issue appears to be a long time lag on my 2009 13" macbook pro. if it let it run long enough it apparently has sorted itself out. not positive but i think the fact that i am doing this on my laptop means i found the files that i was searching an hour and a half for on my mac pro desktop.

so you may have helped me in a huge way over here.

i think i have a bunch of questions on spotlight though so perhaps i should start another thread for this.

anyway, a huge thank you for helping with this.

    regards

Just keep in mind that starting a spotlight search with just the letter 't' is going to pull up  a tremendous amount of stuff. You really need to start the search with something more specific.

If the file(s) you are looking for are 'dwg' then by starting in a Finder window search and entering the file extension first you'll save a great deal of time.

    hi frank.

can you help me a bit more here?

the search results out of spotlight finally sorted themselves out but it sure did take some time. also, i notice that in order to get spotlight going i have to put in a /letter/ and then i put in a criteria such as file extension "dwg". then i have to go /back/ in and remove the letter so i get the results of ALL dwg file types.

this is not /so/ many results since i don't have a lot of these files ont he laptop.

but at the same time are you telling me that simply putting in "dwg" into  FINDER window is going to result in the same results if i just put in "dwg"?

i mean i put in "dwg" with "All My Files" selected on the left and then somehow it shows up in the "Search for:" tab as "NAME | dwg". however there is only one result which is a XLS file.

if i click on "This Mac" instead of "All My Files" i am not seeing a change.

are you saying that FINDER and SPOTLIGHT are the same because i think i heard this before and i am not seeing them work in the same way for me at the moment.

    THANKS

yeah. so i can pulldown the little "name" arrow and select "everything" but this seems to pull up a lot of results that presumably are including "everything" of some kind of text or something...

wish there was also some really helpful docs to read up on this functionality becuase i haven't found much documented on these tools that is helping me.
