What kind of ethernet cable do I need to transfer files from a PC to my Macbook?  When I do an Amazon search, there seems to be lots of different kinds.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

A standard Cat 5, Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable will work.
If you have any ethernet cables in your home, 99% certain it will work between your Mac and PC. If it is a one time transfer, you may even want to consider using the ethernet cable that leads from your modem to your router (if you have one). You won't have internet for a little bit but it will save you some bucks on the cable

All current Macs can use either a straight cable or a cross cable -- they will adapt to whatever you plug in.

For Gigabit Ethernet speeds, the cable needs all eight conductors present and all eight contacts.

Your Mac has the ability to serve as a lightweight Router when you enable Internet Sharing across Ethernet -- this can allow it to assign IP Addresses that "just work".
