I have this same problem! I tried downloading new software through iTunes, and facetime worked for a day, but then it stopped working. It has to be the ipad itself and not the software...

After trying everything, here's what worked for me: go to settings - facetime, and when it asks how you want to be reached on facetime, uncheck the icloud email option. Hope it works!
