Can mountain lion's finder be set up to search all filles including system files? Example can find search for /etc/*.* files?

Is it possible?

To my knowledge, no. If you're comfortable with the command-line, the mdfind utility is spotlight's command, and it will search for system files.

Sorry, I had a momentary lapse of brain power. Yes, you can do this: When searching for a file in the Finder, add a filter and select "Other" in the list of filters. Scroll down to "System Files" and check "In Menu" for future use. You should be able to search for system files now.

Thanks res1233 , I am familiar with the command line. However the reason I am alittle doubtful that there is no search for all files is that the finder allows for a command "Command" +"Shift"+"G" which allows viewing of any directory. SO based on that I suspect there might be a mode to search for any file on the systems.

Even adding System files to the Finder window search capability does not include the HD/Library or ~/Library folders. Those are verboten to Spotlight.

For finding any file on the hard drive I use Find Any File.  It searches invisible files, system folders and packages.  If it's on the hard drive FAF will find it.

Advertising a useless app is probably against forum rules... Spotlight can search for hidden files by adding that functionality, as well as system files (two different options).

I'm not advertising just recommending as I've been a user of  it for quite sometime now in lieu of Spotlight.  It's only agains the TOU is one has a financial interest in the item being recommended.

As it's not useless IMO.  I find it easier to find things due to the layout of the search results window. And it can search drives and find files that haven't been indexed by spotlight.

But you're right about Spotlight.  Tried again and it did find files in the HD/Library as well as the ~/Libary.  Would'nt the last time I ran the test. However, you must be starting from a Finder window rather than the Spotlight search field in the menu bar.  From there is still won't search system files.

So if I have to open a Finder window do do my searching I'd rather open FAF and use it.

Yes, Spotlight search in the menu bar does not search for normally unnecessary files.

I don't think that Spotlight indexes the content in the afformentioned locations, though.

Barney-15E, That was the ticket, Thanks!

All I have to do is select "system files". so the search can be performed on all files.

There is also one for "file visibility," which is handy, also.
