I have the same problem since upgrading to lion. Also any previously downloaded movies will not play in aperture. If I manually find them in the Aperture Library they will play fine via quicktime.. I have tried rebuilding my library and repairing permissions.

Help! After Lion crashed my hard drive and I had to jump through major hoops to get it rebuilt, I now have this same problem with my Aperture 3.1. Unsupported video format for my Nikon D7000 which is supposedly supported. The same movies are recognized fine with iPhoto. How could the Apple/Aperture developers miss this????

Same problem here. iPhone4 movies will not play in Aperture after upgrade to Lion. It will let me open in Quicktime, but only after hanging for a few seconds.

OK, I fixed the problem by uninstalling 3ivx.
I was also having a problem where my videos would not play in the "quick look" view in finder, but would play in Quicktime.
The annoying part was that I needed to delete the videos and re-import into Aperture to get them to play.
Everything seems to work OK now.

I've imported new videos into Aperture since removing 3ivx (which was installed by my Flip camera), but the new videos still won't play in Aperture, and iMovie 11 is not recognizing them and importing them into events.
It seems that many are encountering this problem, but I haven't see any acknowledgement that the problem exists.

Upgraded to Lion last week, now .mov video files won't play in Aperture. If I export a .mov file from Aperture, quicktime plays it just fine.

So frustrating. I have been an Aperture fan and advocate since 1.0. I manage a photo department. The "unsupported video" messages are unacceptable after my quirky upgrade to Lion. Almost 40,000 photo and 3000 video files and Aperture doesn't recognize many of the video filesp (the same 900x600 message above). I downloaded Adobe Lightroom 3.0 and it sees all the videos perfectly. Aperture is up to a 56 GB file now, even with referenced files. Lightroom takes very little real estate and appears vey robust. I still prefer the Aperture interface but just archived the file and am moving to Light Room. I called Apple support and they were very nice, but said they didn't have the answer. Yes, I also uninstalled 3ivx and it fixed some of the files but not all. See you later Aperture, maybe after Apple prioritizes and fixes it.

I too had Aperture 3.1.3 installed, and after my Lion upgrade found that all newly imported videos, and some older ones, would not play in Aperture. This has pestered me for a month until I just found this thread, so I thought I would expand. The 3ivx fix has worked for me too, and as someone stated here.
I first removed my Divx software, for which there is an uninstaller, but I don't know whether this was necessary, as it did not resolve the issue. I also attempted to reinstall Lion and reinstall Aperture, which also did not resolve the issue.
What did resolve the issue was to remove the 3ivx component from /Library/Quicktime then restart the machine. Recently imported movies from my iPhone had to be reimported to work, but after these steps the movies are working normally again!

Not sure if you are still suffering from this problem, but I have been suffering from a similar issue, and tracked it down to the files being imported from a shared folder. If the shared folder has any Access control list set up, or the permissions aren't quite right (including some that you can only change yourself in Terminal like permission to Execute), then the video will import but appears to be unsupported.
An easy work around is to move the file to one of your personal directories into a library also in your private directory. If you are actually looking to share your library, then I had to set up a new partition and set it to 'Ignore permissions'. It then worked absolutely fine - also resolved some corruption issues I sometimes got with the shared library.
Hope this helps, and let me know if you need more details.

I need details. As noted in another discussion I was importing files from my iPhone to Aperture and got the "triangle ! error message ...file type not supported". From the discusssion I used the uninstaller for 3ivX. This allowed me to do a trial video with a Canon G11, import it and play it in Aperture. Aperture gave me an error message" need to repair libraries" which I did. Aperture kept crashing and locking up my computer and still did not recognize the previosly imported video. I did a PRAM reset after it locked up the last time. I then re-imported the iPhone videos. Now I can see and play them in Aperture. Unfortunately iMovie still does not recognize them. I moved one to desktop and it does not recognize it there as well. Any help appreciated since my goal is to use iMovie to edit and finalize them.

I have months with this problem too perhaps this will help:
Today I installed QuickTimePlayer7.6.6_SnowLeopard
Upgraded to QuickTimePro
Installed Perian_1.2.3 (free)
Installed Flip4Mac 184.108.40.206 (free)
Restarted the mac
Suddenly aperture was working and all the videos Unsupported now are recognized
For black previews and thumbnails I just selected them clic Photos and Generate Thumbnails
Hope this help.
