Q: How to unlink iMessage from phone number?

I recently switched over from iPhone 4 to a Samsung Galaxy S4. I used the iPhone for 2 years with iMessage on. I no longer use the iPhone. I turned off iMessage on my iPhone, I unregistered the iPhone from my Apple account. However my friends and family that own an iPhone with iMessage turned on, everytime they text my number...my new phone doesn't receive the text message. It still shows that my number is iMessage capable with the blue bubbles. And that is weird because I own an Android device now. How do I fix this issue? It's really annoying and I can't receive any texts from those people with iPhones.

Try going to appleid.apple.com to ensure that your number has been removed. That has worked for other people I know.

Made the suggested changes to my appleid - THANKS! - but no immediate relief. Will try again in 24h - does anyone know the cycle time for their database?

Other option is to change your Apple ID password.

Worked immediately for me since I didn't have access to my iPhone anymore.

I have the same problem, and one of the biggest issues is that I'm not getting the text messages from people using iPhones anymore because it keeps sending as iMessages and I don't use the iPhone anymore. I don't care that the iPhone is still getting it, I care that my new phone isn't.

If the senders are sending as SMS instead of iMessage, then you'll surely recieve the messages. Since iMessage is only for iDevices, the senders have to turn on the "Send as SMS" in their iMessage setting. SMS is the only way you can message between Android and iOS without internet. I hope I make sense. GL.

It does make sense, but the automatic setting on everyone's phone is to send as iMessage. They need to hold the text message for 2 seconds and then tap send as SMS every. single. time. they send me messages...

There are some pretty poor responses here. Its simple go to Settings\Messages\SendandRecieve. From there you can make changes such as deselecting the number etc. You do not need to delete anything.

Have your friends turn iMessage OFF, send you a message (it will go as a txt message), then they can turn iMessage back ON.  It'll work fine after that...

I had an Iphone and switched to an Android and had the same frustrating issue. After trying several things I was finally told to reset my apple id password. As soon as I did this I was able to receive text messages again from Iphone users. Hope this works for you too.

I've tried all the posted solutions and nothing has worked. This is rediculous. I'm never buying another Apple product again, even if they do make the best laptops.
