Q: How to display 2560x1080 on external monitor from MBP or MBA?

Is there any way to make MBP 17 (Intel HD and nVidia GT graphics, SnowLeo) or MBA 13 (Mountain Lion) display 2560x1080 on external monitor (LG 29" ultrawide)? My MacPro with RadeonX1900 card (10.5.8) does it perfectly but I cannot find a way to get the laptops to do it. Tried res. switching apps, still no good. Thanks.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I was having the same problems as most on this thread, I tried the Mini display port to display port cable and although the screen was OK the resolution was poor, then tried a Mini display to HDMI and that brought up the same problems as hdmi to hdmi, so now using the old version of switchresx 3.8.7, from HDMI to HDMIi, after trying the new version that didn't seem to work and all is great. I was worried that the LG29, would have to go back, BTW using a Macbook Pro Retina 15" and the settings above worked

Wow - thanks for the info. I was just thinking about getting the retina but I guess I'll stay with the 17in MBP. Just found out that it can run 16gb RAM, so I'm gonna keep it with the LG.

    hello, everybody!

    i just bought the same monitor, LG 29EA93 (21:9) @ 2560 x 1080, and is pretty awesome!

I got the same problem, ´cause LG dont built the drivers for mac, but reading your previous post,  and some luck i found a solution.

I used the SwithResX, and i set a custom resolution like this. See pics.

    Then i Reboot, and done.

The conection that i am using y is a Mini Display Port to HDMI.

Thats for all this info . I half read it an bought the screen and a Mini Display Port to Display port , all work right away but the Text look very Jagged . so I set up HDMI and used the SwitchRex 3.8.4  this make things look much better..  is this why everyone esle had to edit with SwitchRex cos it look bad ..?

just wonder why you cant use Mini Display to Display port cable and still use switchrex ..

for me the same: Mac Mini mid 2011 with miniDiplayPort -> DisplayPort adaptor is working, but the text looks jagged and very 'crappy'...

No I'm using a no-brand miniDisplayPort -> DVI cable together with the switchresx parameters posted by genriquediaz and it's working great!

btw. on my Windows 7 systems everything works out-of-the-box,...

ah sry. I'm using a miniDisplayPort -> HDMI Adaptor,..

miniDisplayPort -> DVI is also working, but I think the picture looks better with the HDMI Adaptor.

Thanks for this easy solution! I bought the cable of your link and it works perfectly without SwitchResX.

I do not understand how it works, maybe the display is stored in the OSX 10.6.8 update?

Normally, as per Apple statement, double adapter don't work well.

Guys after strugling for quite sometime, even doing what was refered in this post, I still had problems with the blury fonts. I found the excelent post below:

    http://ireckon.net/2013/03/force-rgb-mode-in-mac-os-x-to-fix-the-picture-quality -of-an-external-monitor

The issue is that the LG is detected as a Television instead of the Monitor that it is.

    Thank you IReckon!

This saved me yesterday when I bought the monitor for my mid 2012 Macbook Air. Mini DP to HDMI etc just didn't work, saw this, plugged in the Mini DP to DP and it worked like a charm. Simple solution to a potentially complicated problem.

Hey!!! Thanks very much!! I have the same monitor, but under version LG29ea73-P, and when I tried to plug it on a MacBook Air 13 (2011) Lion with Cable MiniDisplayport to Displayport, the screen turn black e Macbook frozen and I had to restart. When I saw your comment about de SwitchResX, I downloaded it the 4.3.6 version and plug it again, the screen turn black again and the Macbook appears a message to Turn off by hold button on and turn on again three times, and then it works perfectly......

Before that I've tried the cable Mini Displayport to DVI Dual Link of Apple, and it not work with the resolution. The screen not appears or when appears, it became green.

    Thanks for help.....
