Correct, a warranty replacement will be of the same model, size, and colour.

That is correct. That is Apple's policy (and the warranty policy of most electronics manufacturers that I know of.)

Think of an auto mechanic's service bay.  You tow in your disabled car to have it fixed.  When the repair is done, the mechanic hands you the keys to a newer model with a different body and much higher performance.  Great deal right?  Unfortunately, real life does not work this way.

If you want a newer model, your solution is not in the service department, but on the sales floor.  The Apple store is no different.

You can use the recycling program to get some form of credit and then use that to buy an iPhone 5 if you'd like.

Under Apple's policy, they will not be able to swap out the device even under the circumstance of paying the difference.  It's a warranty to replace your device, not give you the option to invest $450 into a device and then pay $200 later.

As stated before, the replacement phone will be an exact replica of the model you currently have. There is no way around this and you cannot be the exception.  If you would like an iPhone 5, the only way to get that would be through either an upgrade or a full purchase.  It is fair this way as everyone who is a customer goes through the same process. There has to be solidarity.

It's as simple as understanding the concept of buying a something new.  If you want the new thing, buy it.  Don't go to the service department for anything other than a repair.

The in-store recyling program is only for iPods.  The credit can be used for a newer version of iPod.  There is no correlating program for iPhone inside the Apple store.

The problem with your "so simple" scheme is that it takes the carrier out of the loop and thay can't lock you into extending your contract with a subsidized iPhone upgrade...

Ah, my apologies for the misinformation.  Should've checked that a bit deeper.
