Q: Device Not Found after hard reset

So I am having difficulties with my TC (2Gb, 2nd gen, I believe)

My Airport Utility is Version 6.3 and I am operating in OS10.7.5. The only way I have been able to configure the Base Station is through the "Configure Other" button. Everyting else in the Airport Utility is grey

I've creatd a new wireless network but the screenshot still shows the old network name. The AirPlay and Airport Express devices are likewise "Not Found"

Any advice or recommendations?

Time Capsule, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Do it by ethernet. Plug the TC directly into the computer using wired connection.

And in Lion you can simply install the older utility.. this might make life a lot easier.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

It can be run alongside 6.3.. don't attempt to remove the later one.. just use 5.6 instead.

Start out again.. but a Gen2 never had a 2TB disk.. so if it has been modified.. check that it has boot correctly and LED should be green or slow flashing amber.. if it is out.. then you have power supply problems.

What is the model number from the rubber base mat. A1xxx?

    Thanks LaPastenague

You are correct, my mistake. The model number on the TC base is A1355 and only 1Tb.

Rolled the TC firmware back to 7.5.2 and tried to install Airport Utility 5.6 but get an installation error near end of installation process. Crud

I turned off the wireless and plugged the TC directly into my MacPro. Airport Utility still cannot see the base station but can get to the internet.

airport utility 6.3 now requires ipv6 local link working on the device using it..

This adds to its all round doggieness.

Apple belatedly realised the new utility doesn't work without it.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597

    IMHO install 5.6

I assumed since you were on Lion in your profile that was correct.. here is how to install it in Mountain Lion.

How to load 5.6 into ML.

    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482

Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.

    2. Download and install unpkg.

    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/

Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.

You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

    Thanks again LaPastenague

I followed the steps you suggested and was able to launch Airport Utility 5.6 from the folder created on my desktop. I could see my TC in the Airport Utility window.

I began extending the network to include a previously known Airport Express and AirPlay devices elsewhere in my house. The Airport TC indicted that it needed to re-start and I clicked "Continue".

At this point I got an error indicting that no wireless devices were found plus a button to "Rescan" which I did...mutiple times. Still no wirelsss devices found.

Like wise when I try to "Configure Other" via the 10.0.1.1 address.....no devices to configure.

(yes, I'm writing this from a different location/computer)

Unless you have another suggestion I'm going to take the TC into an Apple Strore for some attention or replacement.

A Gen3 TC can be problematic.. but I don't think so from what you are saying.

When you start messing around with an existing network especially when you replace the main router in it.. then I think you can expect this to be less than easy.

Basically you need to start clean and fresh. Factory reset everything and start over.

And when you set things up you might need to power cycle the whole network more than once.

If the TC works ok stand alone.. test bit by bit.. I am not sure how you are extending.. I need more info to help.

If the TC is extending existing wireless.. or the TC is being extended..

The way I would do this is setting up fully and completely from scratch.

    Factory reset the Gen3 TC.

Set it up in correct mode.. either bridge or router. And plug it in to the main modem.. make sure that all works.

And in the case of Gen3 make sure it works for a few hours. as they can go bad as they get hot.

Then start extending wireless with your airports.. and you might do that using 6.3 utility which can be easier than v5.6.. as long as the TC is setup correctly it should add fine.

But IMHO use wireless and network names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.

And you must use WPA at least.. but for extended. use WPA2 Personal with a pure alphanumeric password, 10-20 characters .. mix of upper and lower case and numbers..

    See how it goes..
