Why would it matter if they could find out you sold it?

cause I thought I was gonna use it myself, but didn't need to, so decided to sell it and sold it higher than I bought.

So again, why would that matter if the person from whom you bought the phone was able to learn that you'd sold it?

It matters to me.  Is there a way to find out? i.e. apple store, phone carrier, etc?

No. It is not yours anymore and you have no right, nor any ability to gather information about someone else's device. You can only track your own devices, ones that you have physical control over.

Perhaps I'm being unnecessarily suspicious, but this situation seems a bit dodgy to me, so I'm not going to answer further. Your request may be perfectly innocent, but it's the exact question someone would ask if they'd stolen an iPhone and wanted to know if the owner or police could track it. Hence I'm going to provide no information about this scenario. If that is unfair to you and this is a completely legitimate request, I apologize.

Thanks, Michael, now let me flip it:

Let's say I was the original owner of the iphone (thru AT&T). I upgraded to 5; then sold 4s cause didn't need it, then that person re-sold it at store. Since I was the original owner of it, can I know if it's been put back in service, or re-sold?

No, you cannot.  Again, you can only set up tracking, or acquire information from the service provider, if it is your device, and under your physical control.  No company is going to hand you information about someone else's device or account.  Your being the original owner has nothing at all to do with it.  You are not the current owner, hence have no rights to information concerning it, and no ability to gather such information.

Michael, I believe he's trying to determine if the original owner can find it. See my response below for my perhaps overly-skeptical thoughts before you reply further.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, Michael.  BTW, I'm a legal owner of an ipad; three iphones and one appleTV (just in case somebody wonders)... they say it takes one to know one.
