Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can upgrade to Snow Leopard and Lion. Now, in order to know if you can run Mountain Lion, open > About this Mac > More Info, and check that your model identifier is iMac7,1 or higher. If so, you can run Mountain Lion.
First, buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard Then, make a backup of your files, insert the DVD and upgrade. After upgrading, open > Software Update, and install the most recent version.
Now you have Snow Leopard, which is sufficient and it's still supported, so if you want, you can stay with this Mac OS X version. If you want to upgrade further than this Mac OS X edition, open the App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. Check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com
