My ipod nano won't appear in itunes but appears in finder on my macbook pro

Help!  My ipod nano, 6th generation, won't appear in itunes but appears in finder on my macbook pro.  I tried to reset it, tried the opening in disk mode, and nothing works.  When I connect it to my mac, it says "connected: eject before disconnecting."  I see it in Finder under my devices but it does not come up in my devices in itunes. 


My dad gave me this ipod since he wasn't using it and said it was having problems.  This is my first (and repeated) attempt to have it connect to my macbook.  I have never had this ipod appear in itunes on my mac, just in finder.
