Hi, is it web based Java apps?

Can you be more specific about what applications do not run? Are these stand-alone Java applications or Java Applets running in Safari?

Before you revert to a lower Java may I suggest you try deleting cookies in Safari preference.

The cookies store the Java level and will interfere with an app even though you may have the highest Java level currently which is 17-25.

That is why dumping the cookies will allow the app to run afterwards.

Also, resetting Safari wouldn't hurt anything.

Some 3rd party apps may need to have the cookies dumped more often if you are starting to run into launching problems with the app.

But once it is running fine, just let it be but remember Cookies, Cookies, Cookies.

Also everytime you update to a new higher level of Java, you will have to remember to dump those cookies in your Safari Preference.
