Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
- Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
- Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
- Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
- In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
- Click on the Create button.
- Open and close the new library to see if the problem is fixed.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2: Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
It worked! Took a long time but it worked. I bought the program so I could delete duplicates. Thank you.
So here's the next/last question: I have 24,000 photos in my collection. I do use Time Machine, but I think I'd like to store the library on a new external hard drive I bought.
What steps should I follow to do that?
Thank you very much.
It's simple to copy the a library to an external hard drive:
1 - make sure the drive is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with Ownership set to be ignored.
2 - drag the library from your boot disk to the EHD.
3 - launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and open the library on the EHD to make sure it copied correctly and works as expected.
4 - launch iPhoto again with the Option key held down and open your working library on the boot drive.
The file is a .avi file. If I place the file itself on my desktop, I can play it. If I drag it to iPhoto, it shows it in "Last Import". However, when I try to play it, I get the message
"a necessary data reference could not be resolved."
Then when I close and reopen iPhoto, the original problem comes back.
What system and iPhoto versions are you running? Do you have QuickTime Player 7 for Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later installed. It you do it would be in the Applications/Utilities folder. If not install it and try again.
