Hi

I deleted some very old back ups from my external hard drive. Now I cannot shut down my Mac Mini anymore, the only way I can do it is by pressing the 'off' button til it turns off.

Any advice please?

PS: I had to delete stuff manually as it was clogging up my external hard drive with 2 year's worth of back ups and I really only deleted the oldest 3 or 4 back ups.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

It is not clear if you're using Time Machine or some other program for backups, but either way I would not think that deleting backups from an external drive would have any effect on your computer.

Regardless, there is some application that is making your computer hang when logging out. Open Activity Monitor and check what you have running.

    Hi Michael,

Sorry I did not respond sooner, I have been away from the forums for a while. You have a lot of processes going on, and it's hard to tell which one is causing the system to hang while shutting down.

In order to refine the list, go to the top of the Activity Monitor window, where it says "My Processes," and change it to "My Processes." That should give us something more specific to work with.

My money, however, is on whatever program you are doing the backups with. What do you do, Time Machine? It's possible that it is looking for the old backups and hanging when it can't find them. That, or the Finder is indexing the external disk every time.

    Cheers!
