It's taken me 3-4 months to assess that my Macbook has an internal problem in regard to audio. This  problem occurs both in the wireless mode and hardwired with an ethernet cable. This occurs both when streaming from the internet or playing music files with an external drive(s) using the latest iTunes.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS: Please note that this occurs ONLY when going through my stereo (2 speakers) system. Without going into great detail, I have a small DAC(digital to audio converter) that is connected on one end to an integrated amplifier( similiar to a receiver). The other connection on the DAC has a usb cable (like a printer cable) attached and the usb side plugs into the laptop.

Again, whether streaming from the internet or playing music files I get a seamless playback for a short while (15 minutes or less) then a very fuzzy distortion which will either result in a drop or will recover to normal playback, but never more than 20 minutes without a failure.

The local cable company has replaced EVERYTHING--box, inside & outside cable to the pole.

Airport Extreme updated, local cable box fine as well. Problem occurs whether either is plugged or unplugged.

A friend brought his netbook. It played seamlessly without any errors.

MacBook (13-inch Aluminum Late 2008), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), Updated Airport Extreme, iTunes
