i've now resolved this by very simply using a different USB port on my desktop PC. I don't understand this stuff but anyone having these issues should perhaps try all their USB slots first.

I'm next in line, i guess. I cannot get itunes to recognize the phone, regardless of the usb port. Interestingly, another program (sonic mydvd plus, if it matters) starts up and does recognize it as an iphone
i deleted the dvd program, rebooted the computer and now it works. I must be a friggin genius

I WILL BE GOING BACK TO PC WHEN THIS COMPUTER WEARS OUT ITS STAY.
I had this problem with iPhone 4 and Windows 7.
I tried various things posted here, including uninstalling drivers and letting Windows re-install them. Nothing worked.
Finally, I uninstalled iTunes, uninstalled all of the other Apple software, and then re-installed iTunes. Now it works fine.
