hi all. i moved to mac a number of years ago and am trying to tidy up some issues. would anyone mind helping me with the following quick questions?

1. is there a way to get rid of the font not found prompt that comes up on all my docs? i assume this is because it is looking for a font that doesn't exist but no matter what i do it still appears.

2. what is the best way to get a template from one computer to another?

3. is there some way to recover default templates that i deleted off of one of my computers?

4. is there a way to put all the default templates in a folder so they don't show up with all my new templates for my newly customized docs?

5. is there a way to get Mountain Lion to have the default save location to my desktop instead of to iCloud?

i am on Lion on the desktop and Mountain Lion on the laptop.

TIA

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), win 7 + win xp in boot camp

Seems you are opening a Windows Word doc. It tells you what the font is, either install it, or stop using .doc in Pages.

    2. what is the best way to get a template from one computer to another?

Save it to your desktop or documents folder, it will be a .template file so wherever you open it it will still be a template file. On the other Mac just save it (once opened) again as a template and it will save it to the template folder in your System Library.

    3. is there some way to recover default templates that i deleted off of one of my computers?

Reinstall. Why did you do that? Also how, they are actually inside the application package.

    4. is there a way to put all the default templates in a folder so they don't show up with all my new templates for my newly customized docs?

Your templates should show up under a 3rd category "My Templates" in Template Chooser.

    5. is there a way to get Mountain Lion to have the default save location to my desktop instead of to iCloud?

It should save to where you last saved, it does on my ML. There should be a duplicate version in iCloud but also one on your Mac.

i am on Lion on the desktop and Mountain Lion on the laptop.

I presume you can't upgrade your desktop to ML? Because you should if you can.

    TIA

Qustion 5. There is a setting in the system preferences where you can choose if documents should be saved on your computer or in iCloud. Can't give youbetter directions as I am on a Snow Leopard computer.

It isn't a good idea to save on the desk top. Save in a folder instead. You can have an alias of the folder on the desktop.

Question 1. When you get the message of faulty font dont use button for Clear all. Select the mentioned font and change it to the one you want. Then save and you will not having the messge appear for that document again.

Q 4. If you click in the left column on i.e. My templates you will only see those.

Q 3. Yes you can install from the DVD and do tha updates. It willnot affect the setting as it doesn't affect the preference file on your computer.

    hi peter. thank you.

i think on some of this i should have been clearer.

    1. i am actually using pages docs when this happens. they were likely originally doc docs but now they are pages. it says bankgothic is missing but i am using whitney instead. so when this comes up i click on "Clear All" and next time it comes up again even after saving. then i have started to click on each individual listing of bankgothic and still it comes up on the next opening. it even is doing this for my templates which is annoying as well.

The font can be buried anywhere, in a space or a return so you need to Select All, in every nook and cranny, including master objects and master pages to replace it. Having replaced it, update your Styles as well so there is no reference to the old font.

    2. thanks!

    3. ok. so total reinstall to get back the templates? i do this with the CD rom is that right? also, i assume this won't affect other settings?

I don't know what exactly you have done because the supplied templates are inside the Application package and I am not sure you know how to get into that let alone delete things. But yes a reinstall (and update) should get you back to a clean start again.

    4. i am not sure i am seeing a My Templates section but i just started working in here. my recollection is that my template showed up at the end of a long list (in Lion which is why i deleted the others and in ML where the defaults all show up before my newly created template) but i can check this.

In the Sidebar of the Template Chooser you should see 3 categories: Word Processing, Layout and My Templates. I suspect you have been saving your templates elsewhere, in which case they won't show up in Template Chooser.

    5. yeah, i cannot upgrade to ML until i buy a new desktop which i don't need except for this purpose. i'd prefer getting a new laptop on the next buy but in the meantime i mess around with these various discrepancies (no fun). anyway, right now - a newly created document in Mountain Lion is getting saved as a "untitled.pages" document and it is being saved as a location to the cloud. i am /naming/ the document and then i am /changing/ the pulldown from Cloud to my Hard Drive. maybe i should try saving to the cloud to see if it saves a copy to my hard drive?

Lion was a mistake IMHO, Mountain Lion is far superior and actually does most of what Apple promised for Lion but didn't deliver. Yes, experiment and keep notes, only way you will find out what actually happens.

    THANKS
