I have asked for references but none have been given by Carolyn Samit as she has likely not returned to the forum yet.
Nothing changes the fact Apple recommended third party utilities.

Jul 7, 2013 2:00 AM in response to MacMiniProby killhippie,Apple does not reccomend third party apps, the outdated info you have does not correspond to the scripts that run in 10.6 onwards. OS X takes care of itself just fine. Apple makes sure that apps in the app store have limited access to the OS, and even then CCleaner has been seen to damage OS X. Onyx cannot be installed without changing gatekeepers settings. OS X runs just fine, leave it be. Please dont say 'Apple recommend' when they clearly dont. Also read how scripts changed from 10.5 to 10.6 that may help you understand.
