I was trying to play iTunes music on my Onkyo Receiver, through Apple TV (latest one), by connecting a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable.  When I had the cable connected, iTunes wouldn't open at all.  Now, since having disconnected the Thunderbolt-to-HDMI cable, and re-starting my computer, iTunes won't respond...every time I try to launch it, it hangs with the spinning beach ball of doom and I have to force quit.

So, my questions are: 1) does anyone know how I could get iTunes to open and play through a Thunderbolt-HDMI cable (or is it not designed to); and 2) in case the iTunes program is now corrupted, what's the best way to re-install it?
