it is possible - as long as you do max 1080/60i or 1080/30p
The PanaSD900 supports up to 1080/60p - not possible with actual iMovie11

Thank you Karsten. Is there a software get-around to do 1080/60p in iMovie 11? Otherwise which programmes might I use to edit at 60p - eg Avid?

a bit expensive, but very useful tool is ClipWrap - which allows to convert straight into an Intermediate, your NLW prefers (appleintermediatecodec for iM, proRes for FCPX).
the fun thing: when you use a free re-wrapper, such as Rewrap2M4V, the resulting h264.mov with the very same 60p is 'swallowed' by iM11 ....
only the automatic transcoding of iM11 isn't triggered by 1080/50p, /60p ....
What I haven't tried, wether iM11 supports 60p as export format - very little need for it, a) I'm using FCPX for 2y, b) HFR are in use here for creating slowmos, so my Projects are 25p, only my imports are 50p, 60p .....
any other NLE supports AVCHD v2 (which includes higher bitrates and higher framerates):
FCPX, Adobe Premiere, Premiere/elements, Avid ...
iM lacks an update now for almost 4y! Looking forward to iM13 .... 14 .....

Hi Karsten - Thank you again - this time for a detailed response. I would love to be able to use my mac with Lightworks - a better NLE system than Avid - but not available until at least September. I will follow your advice re imovie and like you look forward to a comprehensive update. Kind Regards

Install AVCCAM Importer from Panasonic. It works on Mountain Lion
In this way, you can encode directly 1080p60 AVCHD mts into AIC 1080p60 with QT 7 Pro, MPEG Streamclip or JES Deinterlacer. iMovie will ingest these AIC without reencoding.
However after video editing iMovie exports by default only in h264 1080p30. So export through QuickTime into AIC 1080p60 and then encode into h264 1080p60.

… Lightworks - a better NLE system than Avid …
LOL, don't tell the Avid users .......
Avid is for years an 'industry standard', a tool for real professionals. One of the first NLEs, developing since then.
Lightworks is a nice project from UK, based upon the old 'tracks'-structure, Apple has left behind 6y (iMovie-b), 3y ago (FCPX) .....
Don't hang your expectations too high .....
and I don't like 'software to rent' (you cannot purchase Lightworks/pro)
What iMovei indeed lacks for FOUR years is an update!
completely missing AVCHD v2, plug-ins etc etc
