Q: Songs Disappearing from iTunes

I just did the itunes update and MY WHOLE FREAKIN LIBARY IS GONE.  GONE. 

I'm furious.  says it exists somewhere, but I have no idea where.

anybody have a fix?????.  and somebody tell me who's responsible for this???????

Add me to the list of users with missing iTunes files.

The thing is it seems as though some of my files are still there. If I look at my external hdd through finder the album appears completely empty even though ther is only 2 of 13 files in the album that has the exclamation mark.

If I "open in finder" for one of the still linked files of the same album it opens up at the same location showing a empty folder.

However....if I instead of clicking "show in finder" and just copy the link show at the bottom of the"get info" window and past the link into the finder "go to folder" the file actually appears for a brief moment in the finder showing that there is a file in the previously empty folder....***..!?

I have tried changing the link to suite one of the missing files but no luck.....

I guess I'll just have to try and re-rip those 273 missing odd files scatterd through my 15,000 + strong music collection.

In regards to the 'hidden' files....finally figured out that the problem was the external HDD. Ran disk utility and will have to re-format, all I need to do now is to back up about 1Tb somewhere before fixing the problem.

I still have the problem of several files that's gone missing from iTunes.

Add me to the list, lots of songs have disappeared from my itunes library - can't find them again.  Can't download them again as they were cd's borrowed from friends over the years.

So you lost files you never actually purchased and had no legal right to put onto your computer?

Chris CA what's wrong with putting music onto my computer, given to me by friends, for my personal use on my ipod?  Would it be any different if I paid 50p for a cd from a charity shop and put them on?

It is illegal to download or rip songs you haven't paid for in accordance with the licensing agreement for that music:

In the December 2005 decision BMG Music et al v. Cecilia Gonzalez, a federal court ruled that the illegal downloading of songs by a consumer constituted copyright infringement and awarded damages against her of $22,500 for downloading 30 songs ($750 penalty per song). The defendant had actually downloaded 1,370 songs and, under federal law (while it is highly unlikely), the damages could have potentially been assessed at over $205 million.

On June 18, 2009, the first illegal music downloading case to go to a jury trial resulted in a verdict requiring a mother of four children to pay $1.92 MILLION for illegally downloading 24 songs from the Kaaza file-sharing web site. This amounts to $80,000 per song, though she could have been hit for $150,000 per song for the over 1,300 songs she allegedly downloaded (over $195 million). Hello Karen, this forum does not allow a discussion of this matter so you'll only hear the one side. You should be able to find the iTunes folder where your music should still be at on your computer. One of the problems in finding the music folder is that your computer may have hidden it by default. Elsewhere in this thread it explains how to enable you to see all the folders on your computer and how to help iTunes find your music again. At the very least you should be able to find the folder and use iTunes to reimport the folder.

Because you have bought them.

Borrowing CDs from friends and listeneing to them is not a problem.

Making a copy of music that you do not own is the problem.

The computer/OS/iTunes does not hide the music folder "by default" or any other way.
