do you have a macbook? you are in a forum for non-laptop mac.
there was security update just recently so maybe that affected this - they do tend to affect more things that your plain vanilla OS updates.
you show 10.6.8, is that current and true?

So this July 2 update you would have installed Security Update 2013-003 (Snow Leopard)
Do you make bootable backups before applying any such update. So you can work and so you can boot from or incase the update fails or the disk fails. And so you can even test to see if it was the update that affected your work like now.
