Jul 9, 2013 12:39 PM in response to sfromhiby sfromhi, more:
Had just auto-updated OS X.
Running Safari. Fans went on high.
Wouldn't restart: Stuck on grey screen w/ logo and wheel turning.
Reset NVRAM.
Holding "D" key during restart doesn't boot Apple Hardware Test
(boots Recovery HD, Mac OS X Utilities instead).
AHT specific to machine. (I would like to run AHT.)
Can I get a bootable system disk with AHT?
Disk Utility repaired Macintosh HD disk.
Also erased disk.
Can run Macbook as target disk.
Startup disk doesn't show any bootable systems.
Restoring a Time Machine backup from an external HD disk =
erased disk okay,
shows that it writes files,
but estimates over 300 hours to finish. (~150Gig)
Apple didn't ship Installation DVDs.
Won't reload Mac OS X Lion from Apple.
says: "Downloading additional components. 2,925 hours remaining"
then after a few minutes:
"Can't download the additional components needed to install Mac OS X."
Network Utility shows Wi-Fi Link Speed: 54 Mbit/s
Internet Recovery: Command R doesn't bring it up.
(boots Recovery HD, Mac OS X Utilities).
No way to load EFI Firmware Update 2.3 onto Macbook.

Jul 9, 2013 12:48 PM in response to sfromhiby mende1,★HelpfulIf you got your MacBook Pro after July 2011, it came with Lion, so it didn't come wtih DVDs. You have to use Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
You can't start up Apple Hardware Test holding the D key while your MacBook is starting because this is only valid if you have Apple Hardware Test on the OS X DVD or the hard drive. If your Mac didn't come with DVDs, Apple Hardware Test is available in the Internet, so hold Option (Alt) and D keys while your MacBook Pro is starting to download Apple Hardware Test from Apple

Jul 9, 2013 1:17 PM in response to sfromhiby mende1,Apple Hardware Test has to be downloaded from Apple. If you have got a wireless network and it shows up in the list, select it. If not, connect an Ethernet cable to your Mac and the router and Apple Hardware Test will be downloaded

Jul 9, 2013 1:30 PM in response to sfromhiby mende1,If you have to reinstall OS X, I recommend you to do it through Ethernet. The download is faster and you won't have the same problems as installing Mac OS X with Wi-Fi
