Take a look at this article I found while researching the issue you describe:
Apple TV (2nd generation): No audio when using Apple TV
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3789
- Make sure you have the latest Apple TV software update installed.
- On your Apple TV, navigate to Settings > Audio & Video.
- Navigate to the Audio Output option.
- Push the Select button on your Apple Remote to switch to 16 bit.
- Verify that audio is now coming from your TV or AV receiver.
All the very best,
Sterling

Jul 11, 2013 9:15 PM in response to sterling rby whipperbilly403,Hi Sterling. I had previously tried this and still no sound - I think the next thing I will do is unplug the Apple TV and replug it in and see if I can rent a movie and get sound. This is about my last resort. I can think of nothing else and getting Apple to help is impossible.
Thanks for the replay.

Unplugging and re plugging the power is a great idea. I would recommend waiting about 30 seconds after you unplug it before plugging it back in. Also if that doesnt work you can restore the AppleTV with iTunes as the last resort.
