I have an IPhone 5.  YouTube trick worked for me.

Thanks so much for this thread. I had an appointment scheduled at the Apple Genius bar that can now be cancelled. I used a small pin to clear the mic (next to the audio jack), and I blew into the mic and the sound is perfectly fine once again. TRY THIS METHOD before taking it into an Apple store- especially if you have young kids that love to take your phone and play with it.

    Hey guys,

After months of trying everything, it was so dumb and so obvious.

When you get your phone, there is a clear film on the back of the phone that needs to

be removed.  I just removed it and not realizing  that was the problem....

My camera video recorder works fine.  It's not a software problem!!!

Check to see if you have a clear film protector on back of phone that it blocking the recording from being

heard.  NO WONDER!! It sounded sooooo far away.  Dah!!

Good Luck to all, my phone is fine now....lol

    Thank you HomeyJack!

Turning off Bluetooth did the trick for me! None of the other ideas in this forum worked for me.

Whew...you saved me a trip to the Genius Bar.

I've tried every method listed here. The pin clean. The YouTube. The Angry Birds one. The Bluetooth one. The headphones out mid listen one. All of them (incase I've missed one).

    I'm on the 4S.

    Anyone got any other suggestions?

Proper pain in the arse this!

I had the same problem on my 3 year old AT&T iPhone 4, no audio when recording video using the camera app, but other apps worked if they used the mic on the bottom of the phone.  (Example: Facetime)

For me the problem was that the cable that connects the "top" microphone (and for the proximity sensor?) was not tightly connected.  I used the instructions at iFixit found here to fix my problem:

    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPhone+4+Headphone+Jack+%26+Volume+Control+Cable+Rep lacement/4337

I skipped steps 6-12, only needing to remove the EMI shield in step 13 and 14.  It is a bit tricky to get the shield out, but after doing that, it was obvious that the "top microphone/sleep button" cable was partially disconnected.  The topmost part of the connector was slightly elevated away from the board and took almost no effort to pop the connector loose.

Strangely, I never had problems with the sleep/wake button, just with the small microphone next to the headphone jack that is used when recording video in the camera app, and the proximity sensor.  I never heard anything save for a buzzing noise when I played back video recorded using the camera app in iOS.

Its not terribly hard to do the above, just be aware of the sizes of the screws.  Please read all instructions in the link above up to and including step 14, even the ones that you won't need.  The screws ARE TINY!  Make sure you have a screwdriver with a slight magnetic charge to hold those tiny screws, or, have a tweezers handy for removal and placement of the screws.

I have tested both the proximity sensor and audio during video, for me the problems are fixed!

Same issue just occured tonight with my wife's iPhone 4. Unfortunately, that meant I couldn't hear my son's holiday program =(. The headset trick worked for us, but how is that not fixed yet?

I honestly think it's a hardware issue with the phone.  The problem comes & goes for me.  Putting the headset in & then out seems to make it work for a while but I think there is something loose (as per the post above yours) so the only way to permanently fix it would be to take it in for repair.  I had the same thing happen to me at my son's holiday concert  last year so I feel your pain.

Try turning up the volume in any games you have. My volume was at mute in Words with friends so i turned it back up and VOILA!! Seems games/video volume is different to the ringer volume even though you still press the same button. After trying everything above to no avail, the simple solution was such a relief.

I've had the same problem with my iphone 4: video won't record from the camera with any audio (since upgrading to iOS 7, I should add).

    I have tried:

-checking that it wasn't on silent (not on silent)

-checking that bluetooth was off (it was)

-checking that the microphone ports were uncovered (they were)

-playing a youtube video and checking volume there (all the way up)

-tried playing music and checking volume there (all the way up)

-checking settings > sounds > ringer and alerts (all the way up)

-recording with a headset and again without (no joy there)

-cleaning the top micropone out (it was already clean)

-testing sound with Skype (worked there)

-testing sound with Sykpe using a headset (the headset is working as well)

-recorded video with Qik Video (worked there, too)

I also take very good care of my phone, I have a protective case (with holes for the microphones/speakers) that has done very well in the few drops I've had (none of any significant height, and no damage to the glass screen or backing).

This seems to me to be a problem with the native camera app, since other apps are able to make use of the microphones, and the headset is working just fine.  At least, this is the case for my particular 3-year old phone. I would take this to an Apple store for a new handset, but I can't afford to shell out $300+. I also don't have the appropriate tools to open up my iphone.

So, Apple gurus (I'm particularly looking at those employed by Apple): what say you? What is the likely problem and how do I go about solving it/when will it be corrected (if a software problem)?

Remember that there are 2 different microphones on the phone.  The apps that "work" probably don't use the same microphone as the camera app.

Please read my eariler post from this thread (just a few before yours), I had a connector that was not fully seated, that was the cause of my problems, yours may be different, but might be worth a look.  You can purchase the correct screwdriver to remove the screws several places on-line, search for pentalobe and iphone.

Lastly, I have iOS 7 on both of my iPhone 4 phones and they both work fine (now) when using the camera app.

    *A bit of boring background*

My son dropped the phone from about 3 feet and that was enough to jar the cable loose.  (Granted, I had dropped it more than once myself in the 3 years I used it.)  The phone is and has been for most of its life, wrapped in a Ballistic HC case so it has survived many drops, bangs and other general use "oops" moments over the years.

That did not stop the cable from finally working its way loose...

Except, that doesn't explain why plugging in a headset won't work either. The headset does work with the other apps, but not the camera app.

I had the same problem this week. Filmed my daughter in a show but there was no sound when I played it back. I tried everything that has been posted on forums but still no sound.

    Then I discovered why.

Have any of you got your iphone in a case?

Remove it if you have. Record a video. Play it back. Now can you hear the video?

The iphone case was covering the microphone.

    Hope this helps.
