Q: New battery / new charger - not charging

I just bought a new battery for my macbook (2006 model) and then I got a new charger from the apple store. But my battery wont charge. I followed all the directions. and there is an x in the battery Icon. When I unplug it it wont hold a charge. Thoughts?

Some users have reported that cleaning the contacts on the battery helps resolve this.
