- Install the latest version of iTunes (11.x) on your computer if it isn't there already
- Connect your phone to your computer
- Wait for the phone to appear in iTunes, then click on its name
- Click the "Check for updates" button
One thing I should probably add - if your phone is jailbroken don't update it; a update will have unpredictable results, and may disable the phone.

Also important to make sure you have a full and complete backup of the phone before proceeding. On the same iTunes setup, select local storage in the phone's Summary page, then click on Backup... Can confirm the backup's existence by going to iTunes' Preferences / Devices and checking the phone is listed and the backup date. That way, if anything goes wrong in the process, none of your stuff in the phone will get lost.
iCloud-based backups, besides requiring an iCloud account, do not store all the stuff and may take longer, depending on Internet connection speed and availability.

The iGadgets cannot be plugged between themselves. iTunes only works on a computer, Mac or Windows.

There's certainly no harm in backing up first, but when you start an Upgrade the first step that iTunes will do is a complete backup of the phone. What you SHOULD do is check to see if Encrypt Backup is checked, and if it is, that you know the backup encryption password.
