Since I installed a new hard drive a few weeks back, songs entered into my iTunes library
are going into a "Music" folder on my external hard drive, rather than "iTunes Media" folder which was the case before.  If I move the "Music" files into the media folder, they won't play.  Is there a way to correct this?  I'm concerned chiefly because I want to move my iTunes library to a larger external drive and I know from experience that the library shifting can be a very touchy matter.

Can you be a bit more specific about the paths involved? What is the setting for the media folder in iTunes Preferences > Advanced? Occasionaly permissions problems make iTunes place media in the wrong location, but I'm not sure you've posted enough detail to make that call.

See Make a split library portable for tips on getting a library ready for error free migration.

OK, try it this way... What is is the full path to a file you think is in the right place? And same again for one in the wrong place? The media folder can be automatically reset if the drive isn't ready when iTunes starts. Ideally you'd want your library files at /Volumes/<External name>/iTunes and the media folder at /Volumes/<External name>/iTunes/iTunes Media. The earlier link shows how to manipulate a library into that structure, but first we should make sure we understand what is happening now...

Based on the 99% your media folder should indeed be corrected to /Volumes/Iomega/iTunes Media. Once you've done that you can use File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate files to bring in copies of the files that are stored in the wrong location.

If you look at the image of the folder structure in the linked post you should see that in the current layout artist folders are moved down into a Music subfolder within the media folder. If you want to switch your library into this format use File > Library > Organize Library... > Reorganize files in the folder...

Your active library files are in the standard location of <User's Music>/iTunes. When you want to move to a bigger drive you can either change the media folder and consolidate, or use the technique I've given to link up the "split library" then move the entire iTunes folder as a unit. The benefit of the second approach is that a library in this form is easy to backup and will work with a new or rebuilt computer.
