The operating system and all its installed applications uses up less than 15 GBs of space. It will fit comfortably on a 16 GB flash drive.

Thanks.  I am trying to install some new software that needs 56 GB (Final Cut 7) and I only have 41 GB free.  I am trying to figure out what I can get rid of and was unable to figure our what is using up so much space on my hard drive (which is only 120GB anyway).  I may have to stick with my old version of FC on this laptop.

You should not leave your system with only a few GBs free. For your drive's size you need to allow a minimum of 20 GBs as free space.

Are you sure about that space requirement? I've not seen any software application requiring 56 GBs. FCPx only uses about 2 GBs.

    Minimum System Requirements

    • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better.
    • 2GB of RAM (4GB of RAM recommended).
    • OpenCL-capable graphics card or
Intel HD Graphics 3000 or later.
    • 256MB of VRAM (512MB of VRAM recommended).
    • Display with 1280-by-768 resolution or higher.
    • OS X v10.6.8 or OS X v10.7.5 or OS X v10.8.3 or later.
    • 2.4GB of disk space.

Yes, I know it only uses 2, but in order to load it, it requires 56GB free space?  Tells me I have -12 GB available.  I had removed the old files.  When I went to re-load the old version back on, I got the same message?  At that point I just threw up my hands.  The only way I can think of now is to hook up my other laptop (still has old FCP on it) as an external drive to this laptop, and drag the files over.  Only problem is I won't really be 'installing' and may not pull all the drivers, etc.  This has me baffled.

Have you considered installing a larger internal HDD?

    Ciao.

Of course I considered it, but really this laptop doesn't need it.  In general, this is a backup to use when my other 3 computers are in use.  Lots of film work this month has necessitated it to be used for editing.  But generally it is not used for that, just for email, document files, etc. and there's plenty of space for all of that with 40+GB to spare.
