no signal cant dial out

i cant dial out as i have no bars on the signal just dots,also cant send texts or recieve them as also cant recieve incoming calls.i bought this phone from friend who had iphone4 which was upgraded to the 5,its on o2 network but i put giffgaff sim in as it runs on same network but still no signal,even put o2 sim back in and still no signal,can browse the internet on 3g with it ok,

    Hello rabbf3,

     

    I recommend this from our iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant found here http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/assistant/calls/#section_2, to help troubleshoot the cellular connection. Start at step 2 and work your way down as needed. Here is the 2nd step to get you started:

     

    Reset network settings

    To reset your network settings, tap Settings > General > Reset, then scroll down and tap Reset Network Settings.

    Hmmmm,

     

    Another consideration is to verify that the phone is unlocked from the carrier.

    Are you using any kind of case that could cause interference? Also have you attempted to restore the phone? And when did this start happening?
