Q: My time capsule said my disk needs repair.  I have used Airport Utility to erase the disk, but that never completes, even though I left it running overnight.  How long should it take to erase a 3TB disk?  It would be nice if Airport Utility gave progress.

Quick Erase takes about a minute, maybe two.

Zero Out Erase is going to take 6-7 Hours maybe more.

If the Quick Erase option will not complete, I am afraid the the disk is physically damaged and cannot be repaired.
