LeonieDF - BINGO! It appears that the 29 photo's I can see under rejected in Aperture (out of the 1185) are ones which I took to rejected in Aperture - the rest of them were hidden in iPhoto originally. Interesting that Aperture still reports the total 'hidden' images under the total by 'rejected'.
Thank you so much for your help guys. Now need to work out a way to unhide everything in iPhoto and then re-hide or 'reject' them in Aperture..
I am a happy man :-)

You are welcome - one mystery solved.

How about creating a "Hidden" album in iPhoto?
New > Smart Album > Photo is hidden?
Set the "View" menu to show hidden photos.
Then select all photos in the custom "Hidden" album and press ⌘L (Photos > Unhide Photo).

Fantastic Frank. I suddenly had hundreds of 5* rated images in the reject folder and couldn't work out out how to clear them. Sure enough your idea showed that the smart folder had all kinds of additional criteria that included 5* ratings amongst others. Having removed them reject folder now functions properly. Thanks.
