You can use the Do Not Disturb setting while your iOS device is locked to silence calls, alerts, and notifications.

Not saying Chris CA did not nail it, but I'm not sure you completely understand the purpose and this might help. It silences all notifications depending on what settings you use. In other words, it would not even vibrate.
