Hello, my name is Dave. I do praise and worship music at a small church.

I want to mirror my ipad on a projection TV. I have the ipad and apple tv but it's not using the entire projection screen. It only uses about 40% of the screen.

I also want to use portrait mode as landscape is to wide and won't display the entire song well.

Apple suggested keynotes but I understand that doesn't work in portrait mode. That is a biggie for me. I have notability but isthe problem the app or getting the right screen resolution ont he projector / apple tv or how can I fix this please?

Thanks,

Dave

iPad is 4:3. If the screen is 16:9 then its not going to fill the screen

Correct, it's not fitting. How can I fix this though? What solution can I go towards?

Certainly, there should be a way to maximize the portrait mode of the ipad to the max height of the projector. That would leave extra room on the sides but that is understandable.

It's not meant to, they are different aspect ratios. The only thing would be to look into the settings on the projector in order to stretch the image, however that is going to cause distortion.

Well if we can put a man on the moon... lol!

I did some research on this and found a ton of people looking for this type of thing. Many instructors in schools etc. and I didn't seem to notice them finding answers. It's such a needed thing.

Mirror whatever is on my ipad on the projector. Apple tv does it, but does it terribly. I'm just baffled that we don't have technology to simply expand it to it's greatest height. Somehow maybe the ipad scale be able to be changed to match the projector ratio etc.

I guess I'm just baffled at there not being a solution for this problem.

I think you are missing the point. Mirroring is sharing the iPad screen exactly as it is on your TV. The display is 4:3 and a TV is 16:9.

Is there a way then to change the resolution on the ipad?

Can you concieve any work around or alternative way of solving this delima possibly in another manner?

    I certainly appreciate your time.

Resolution and aspect ratio are different things. You cant change the physical dimensions of the iPad. That is how it will natively be displayed.

I did mention the other option earlier, which is to change settings on your TV and stretch the image. Again, you will be looking at distortion.

Get Apple TV and use AirPlay..

If not just wait for the technology to get here..or better yet pray for it, seems like that's your specialities is praying and not realizing you can't change the size of the ipad screen.

Well that's the issue my friend. I called apple and told them what I wanted to do. They told me to get those things. So ... I called abck and double checked. I asked a different person the same scenario. Same ereply. So yes I did order apple tv and airpolay. As stated it doesn't work. The image is WAY smaller than the screen and it's not scaleable at all.

I don't understand what the praying jab is about. Praying was never mentioned in the issue here was it?

Back to the issue: it's not that I didn't realize this technology isn't here I was told it was by two different techs. So when I called back to explain my problem I was bounced around apple to several departments to find the technology simply wasn't here yet as I was told. I was informed incorrectly. So appple let me return the products. The customer service person apologized and I certainly accepted.

So the issue has nothing to do with praying etc. it's simply that for some reason, using your ipad for a demo only nets you 40% of the screen size and scaling is not an option.

Wish I knew that before I placed the order as that was not how it was explained either time I called in.

Now, let's have some techs start working on this issue... else I'm about to start praying... ;-)

Has nothing to do with the technology. The device is simply a different aspect ratio. They would have to make an iPad that was 16:9 in order to do what you're asking.

I appreciate the input but I'm certain we'll look back soon and see ipads being able to viwed on screens for classrooms etc. in a MUCH better scalable fashion. Without a doubt. It's just not here yet so... to me technology will overcome that.

I just disagree I guess. I agree it's obviously not here today but it will be very soon. It's very needed.

Again, you are misunderstanding. It has NOTHING to do with the technology. Mirroring is going to show the device exactly as it is on your TV and the ipad is a different aspect ratio. The scaling would be done on your TV/projector and produce dostortion due to image being stretched. That is a fact and it is related to hardware. Again, they would have to create an ipad that is 16:9 in order for your scenario to work. End of story.

I'm not sure why your getting upset (seemingly) here. Yes, I agree it's not available now. Wish I was told that originally on the phone by apple. But are you suggesting that you'll never be able to use an ipad on a projection screen then? Is that seriously what your saying?

Never is a long time and I respect your stance but completely disagree. Like so many things, this one will also be solved somehow. It's well needed.

Not upset, just frustrated. I wasn't part of that conversation so I can't comment on that. Not sure how you came to the conclusion that an iPad can't be used on a projection screen. What I have been trying to say is that it won't fill the screen because the iPad is a different aspect ratio, and mirroring is going to display the iPads screen exactly as it is. Again, Your projector settings can be changed in order to scale the image

A new iPad would need to be developed in order for it to have the same aspect ratio and do this natively. For example, The iPhone 5 has a 16:9 widescreen display and fills the screen when mirrored in landscape.

Not sure how else to explain.
