Q: Is there a way to re-import a Journal into iPhoto?

I created a Journal in iPhoto for iOS and published it to iCloud; but I am seriously running out of space on the iPad and would need to delete the Journal on the iPad. Thus I published it to iTunes, i.e. exported it through iTunes to my Mac and it appears there in a folder with the name of the journal. So far, so good.

Now I would like to do some more editing of the Journal, but don't know how to "re-import" it into iPhoto (iOS) on the iPad.

When I saved the files from iTunes to the Mac, they saved in a folder with the name of my Journal, but when I want to export them through iTunes back to the iPad, the export process does NOT accept the folder, but forces me to select individual files within this folder. Is this the right way (to choose all files in this folder), and will this work?  Or are there other apps (hopefully on the Mac) which allow to work on the iPad created Journal?

Thanks for any ideas and advice. Cheers, from  Austria, Veit Burger

    Veit,

you cannot reimport a Jounal as journal, sorry; only reimport the photos and create the journal new.

Journals have only recently been introduced to IOS, and there are still some features that need improving.  You can only edit a journal on the device it has been created on, and you cannot restore it as a journal from the exported photos. Youc can only recreate it, starting from the photos: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH3152

The only chance I see to restore the Journal on the iPad would be to restore your iPad from a backup to a version that still contains the journal.

Thanks, Leonie, for the quick response and clear answers (while I don't like the content of the answer, i.e. that you CANNOT re-import a Journal into iPhoto (iOS), I appreciate that I now know that it cannot be done). :-)

[I was able to get the previously exported (through iTunes) Folder containing the Journal back onto the iPad (on the Mac: iTunes>Devices>my iPad>the Apps tab>Apps>iPhoto>iPhoto Docs), but the corresponding Journal does NOT show up in iPhoto, although on the iPad>Settings>General>Storage>iPhoto shows up with 7.7GB which is the storage when both Journals showed up in iPhoto]

Re restoring to an earlier version on the iPad: is there a choice of earlier versions, or only a restoration to the LAST backup? Perhaps you can help here, too?!  Thanks, Veit

That will depend on the backups you have:

Open iTunes and go o the Preferences. In the "Devices" tab of your Preferences you should see al ist of all available backups in iCloud and on your Mac.  Is there an older backup available? Then you could use that backup to restore your iPad. You can select from the available backups, when you are restoring the iPad.

I have one backup from yesterday (i.e. not useful) and one from April, i.e. before having created the Journal (i.e. also not useful). But this begs the question, HOW did I manage to have a backup from April, although I have synced many times since. I thought a backup replaces the previous one? Is there a way of forcing a backup whenever one wants and keeping it available for later use?

    Veit,

how are you backing up? With iCloud or with iTunes?

What I am doing - automatic backups to iCloud (this will keep the latest three backups)-, and additional backups to iTunes. You can force iTunes backups by pressing the "Backup Now" button whenever you are syncing with iTunes. And you can save several backups this way.

See:  Choosing an iOS backup method (Should I use iTunes or iCloud to back up my iOS device?)  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5262

    Also, for iCloud backups see:

    Leonie,

These are two very useful pointers, where and how on earth do you find these?

I think I used both methods (iCloud and iTunes) for both the iPhone and the iPad-mini; but in neither method do I have a backup of the iPad of a timeslot that contained the correct Journal.   :-(((   (I also fear that exploring the TimeMachine backups of my iMac won't yield anything useful?!?)

An earlier discussion, which I found, confirms your message above: once a Journal is deleted from your iOS device, it will ALSO be removed automatically from the iCloud server.  It's hard for me to accept this, or why this has to be so, but this seems to be the hard truth. The logical consequence of this seems to be: you can only create and PRESERVE Journals as long as they have space on your iOS device with which they were created. A puzzling, very puzzling, concept. If this is correct, it should explicitely be stated in the official Apple documents for iPhoto for iOS.   (With a somewhat equivalent app for OSX, the iWeb, I can publish as much as the WEBSITE holds, not limited by the space on my OSX device).   Truly puzzling.

Thanks and kudos for all the help you provide in this Forum!

iphoto on iPad and deleting journals only locally!

The question is : can you delete a journal on the device while keeping it on the iCloud server.

    The answer is no.

The only way to preseserve a journal is to save it to iTunes and then publish it on your own server.

    You are welcome!

, where and how on earth do you find these?

Many of them are linked from the Apple support page, or the links to the ressources on the main ASC forum pages - and I find them in the posts of fellow posters here

Thanks for the link to wyodor's page. That is very interesting.

    Cheers
