This might help. This is a link to check your warranty. Maybe if you break your remote or any Apple products, you can see if you can get a new one for free.

D you have any friendly directions of how to connect the remote on my iPad to the Apple TV. It is saying to turn on home sharing on the Apple TV but I am unsure of how to do this...thanks for the advice!

Here is a link to the instructions, which may be impossible to follow without a remote in the first place; I didn't realize you'd never set it up before. Your only option, if you don't know someone who could loan you a remote temporarily, may be to purchase a replacement.

I just ran into the same problem. I lost my remote. Now when I install the Remote App it says "To Control Apple TV: Turn on Home Sharing from Computers on the main menu of Apple TV". So there you have it. A catch-22. Apple never imagined that a person might lose that tiny remote. Without the remote you can't program the Remote app to replace the hardware remote. Sigh.
