Jul 16, 2013 7:39 PM in response to belfastbladeriderby Kirby Krieger,Works great for tens of thousands of users. Sorry it's not yet working for you. In order to provide any advice, we need some more information:
- Are you on OS 10.8.4?
- Has it ever worked well?
- Did it work well before the 3.4.5 upgrade?
- Did you have any problems before upgrading Aperture?
- What is the processor or vintage of your iMac?
- How much RAM?
- How much free space on your system drive?
- Does your system work well when Aperture isn't running?
- Have you tried any of Apple's recommended trouble-shooting?
Don't be discouraged -- some of the best hardware sleuths on the Web frequent our little clearing in the orchard.

Jul 16, 2013 10:11 PM in response to belfastbladeriderby léonie,In addition to Kirby's questions:
- What version of Aperture did you upgrade from?
- And did you install anything else when you upgraded? For example video codecs for PC compatibiliy?
- Have you imported new images before the problem started?

Jul 17, 2013 12:50 AM in response to belfastbladeriderby belfastbladerider,I'm running a late 2012 iMac on OS X 10.8.4.
The previous version of Aperture worked fine but as soon as the upgrade was installed it was terrible and the problems started.
My iMac had 8GB RAM and 1TB hard drive, with a 2TB external drive used for Time Machine and a 1TB external drive for storage of photos. I have 971GB free of the 1TB internal drive.
My system runs well when Aperture isn't running but as soon as I start it, the problems start.
I've been through all the trouble-shooting and the upgrade was from version 3.4
Thanks for the replies guys.

Is this drive formatted for Mac? If it is not formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled), Aperture may have problems and hang.

Check, what Aperture is doing: Open the Activity Viewer (Aperture's main menu bar > Show Activity)
What does it show?
Is it constantly processing the same image or video?
Is Aperture faster, if you hold down the shift-key while launching Aperture? That will disable some of the background processing.

Which exactly? It is hard to suggest something, if we do not know the results of the steps you tired already.
