I have two imacs and 2 emacs all networked together via the same router to the modem and thus to the internet.

One of my two i-macs has suddenly stopped sending mail. (I was sending 13 emails. 9 went OK and then it stopped on the 10th) I have compared the settings in the mail preferences between all four of the computers and all seem identical. The one with faulty email can still use safari OK and when I use that to access my mail on web mail there is no problem. I use both gmail and also a different local provider. When using the mail application, neither can send email, but both can receive email. According to the menu bar both accounts are on line. The "doctor" has green lights by each account.  I have tried deleting the accounts entirely and then eentering them anew, but still the same problem i.e. I cannot send emails from that particular imac. But I can send the identical emails and attachments from the other computers.

So what do I do now?  And what might have caused the problems?

Are you getting an error message when you try to send?

First of all, clear everything from the outbox if the unsent messages are still sitting there. You don't have to delete, you can drag them to another folder and forward them later if you need be.

Then try sending a test message, text only, no attachments.

If you have any security software that affects email, try disabling it.

To rule out a network issue you could try setting up the Gmail address in another user account.

If it's not working in another user on the same computer, restart the mac if you haven't already. Unpluggin the modem/router for a few minutes and reconnecting it may fix it. Even though the other devices are sending fine, I've witnessed the same issue being resolved this way many a time.

Try those steps first if possible, even if none of them work we'll be in a better possition to know which direction to take next.

    Best of luck!

    Step 1

Take this step only if you have more than one incoming mail account, and only some of them are affected by the problem.

From the Mail menu bar, select

    Mail Preferences Accounts

From the account list on the left, choose one of the accounts that is not giving trouble. Select the Account Informationtab if not already selected, and then uncheck the box marked

    Enable this account

Repeat with each of the other well-behaved accounts. Don't disable the problem accounts.

    Step 2

From the Mail menu bar, select

    Window Connection Doctor

Click the Show Detail button. A drawer opens. Try to send a message and post the text that appears. Anonymize any personal information before posting.

    Step 3

If you took Step 1, re-enable the disabled accounts.

    Hi Mush and Lincoln,

Thanks to both of you. I tried all your suggestions, but nothing seemed to work.

But oddly I stumbled on something that DID work. In the mail preferences I deleted the assigned port, changed it to a different one, tried sending a short text email, no joy. So I deleted the newly given port number, re-entered the original port number, and amazingly everything worked. I have no idea why, but I am delighted. I also have no idea why the original  problem suddenly started.

Many thanks to both of you for your support. Even though the suggestions you gave didn't work for me I felt morally supported in that I wasn't struggling on my own with my problem, but the Apple support community was with me.

Your profile confirms you are using Lion "Mac OS X (10.5.8)" yet, you posted in the ML forums. You need to clarify which OS is currently installed on your computer & which Mail version you are using?

If ML is currently installed, please correct your system profile.  If Lion is currently installed, will notify a HOST to move this whole thread to the Lion/Mail forums.

My profile is correct from the Mac that had the problem. But as I said in my original query I have four macs all networked together, all on the same modem via the same router. The newest uses Mountain Lion, the one with the problem uses 10.5.8, and the two emacs are older still.
