Maybe those so called "kids" are smart enough not to pay ridicolous prices for a piece of software. Users who justify the high price with years of developing/coding, man hours etc. are stuck in time. Should I bring up console prices? Or games? Cost millions to develop yet those companys make lots of profit of those games which retail at 60 bucks. Would you buy a game if it was 199$?

It's a comparative bargain for what it does, same applies to FCP X, Aperture and most of iLife/iWork stuff as well as the competitive OS upgrade prices these days.

The AppStore model is the issue for me - existing purchases should remain available indefinitely unless there are specific licensing issues that prevent this - if I don't use Logic Pro 9 enough as a hobbyist or don't make money with it as a pro I don't need to upgrade to X for the sake of it and waste money - I might choose to pay and get the new version, but I'd still like the old one I paid for to be available in the MAS for redownload without jumping hoops to make backups.

The problem with Apple really is that the hardware/software refresh cycles almost turn ownership into a rental/leasing arrangement where you're expected to purchase everything again after 2-3 years at most in order to keep up to date - it may actually be quite efficient if you make money from the hardware/software combination but is increasingly prohibitive for the casual user.

This whole.. "why is there no upgrade price from L9 to LPX" is one of the dumbest, self centered argument/complaints I have heard in a long time....

There are two distinct scenarios here...

    1) For those that bought Logic 9 in the last 30 days.. I can see their point and from what I gather, if they contact Apple, Apple will refund their purchase of L9 for them in most cases. No problem and makes sense.. even though really they are not entitled to any refund according to Apple's App Store policies...

    2) For those simply complaining about the fact there is no discount for L9 owners.. Why should there be? Its all a mental thing.... If Apple had charged $299 for the full product and $199 for the upgrade.. then would that have made any difference to the owner of L9? No.. course not.. They would still be paying $199. The fact that you can buy LPX for the first time at the same price as you can upgrade L9 for.. doesn't matter a jot! if you think LPX is worth $199 to buy or to upgrade then do so.. if not, don't. The fact there is no price difference.. doesn't really matter at all. After all it doesn't affect the L9 owner as to what someone else pays does it? All that matters is what the L9 owner has to pay and they should look at that price and then decide if it is worth it or not.

Given what other DAWs cost and what other Upgrades for those DAWs cost.. then $199 is a steal... for both the upgrader and the first time buyer.

    Simply really....

Still miffed! Request for refund of Logic 9 bought June 19th 2013 refused.

Just thought I'd bump this thread for those still going "WAAAAAAH!, I want Logic X for next to nothing..."

While it may be in contravention of the EULA, it also was filling up my hard drive with a version I didn't want or need. With only a couple of weeks of tentative training exercises on it, it only made sense to start again so I have erased Logic 9 (farewell, hardly knew you!) and only have Logic 10 on my machine. I thought I'd learned this lesson back when I kicked my Mac Plus into the trash and went off to a happy relationship with PC and Soundscape. More fool me apparently.

Apple has always been expert at picking one's pocket. I do think they should give everyone who purchased Logic in the past 6 weeks a cost free update.

However, I don't think anyone should complain about the upgrade price itself, $199 is absolutely the cheapest price out there for what you're getting... yes, being a longtime user (a MIDI only version of Logic 2.5) who has spent a few thousand dollars on Logic over the past 20 years... it's a bit disheartening to see new users get the full package for $200 and at the same time show so little respect for the incredible software they're getting.

I bought Logic Studio boxed for £500. And still bought Logic Pro x the minute it hit the App store. Worth every penny too. Much better!

LPX is no Protools or Steinberg! It's stupid to say 199$ is a steal just because it used to cost more in the past. 199$ Is a fixed price not a promotion! So don't fool yourself. Apple chose that, because it is aimed at beginners....Garageband users. It's a fair price, not a steal! There is nothing groundbreaking in LPX for a DAW that's over 3 years in the making compared to others. Don't get me wrong! I like Logic alot....199$ worth.

Those who have no sympathie for users who bought it very recently are typical Apple consumers: Willing to give Apple money for overpriced repeat products just because it's Apple.

Apple could at least made a gesture to existant custommers at 100 $ or 120 $ the upgrade to Logic X, as it is just an upgrade of Logic 9, not a full re-write like Final Cut

Logic X is not a revolution it is just a little upgrade that you pay a lot if you already own Logic Studio 9

The problem with Apple is that it does not listen to his custommer developping things we dont need, and not developing things we really need !

    - has not implement instruments with more than 16 midi channels

    - still no equivalent to the VST expression Mapping

I hope the bug with IAC is fixed ! (Logic is using only one CPU to send IAC and to send to VSL)

Not true in my case, I won't be upgrading as there's nothing new in this release that I need, I'm perfectly happy with my Snow Leopard/Logic 9 combination.  It's Apple's software.. right or wrong they can charge whatever they choose, whenever they choose.... it's up to the consumer to make the choice that's in his/her best interest.

I do think if you're a first time buyer it's the best buy out there... If you're already a Logic 9 user you have a choice to make... Apple knows it's customer base pretty well, they used to buy everything Apple came out with... that's changing. If you don't like the direction Apple is heading, vote with your wallet or purse.
