My 2013 i7 macbook air fans going full speed during regular use on windows 8

Hi All,

I just bought a 2013 Haswell i7 13" MBA and I succesfully installed windows 8 but it seems like as soon as I login and start using windows the fans start to kick in and the machine begins to heat up. Are there any chipset updates or anything that i need to know about? More importantly is there something wrong or is this a normal occurance? I cant imagine this is how the machine heats up under normal use (browsing the web). Pleaes help.

Thanks,
Geoff

anybody? on the top leftside just above the brightness keys really heats up. I not sure it over heats but it gets pretty hot to the touch. The underside remains relatively cool. This is my first MBA, i'm used to my MB heating up on the underside. Either way I don't think its normal and i'm hoping someone can shed some light on the subject.

try this:

  1. Shut down your Mac and connect the MagSafe power cable.
  2. Press and hold the ‘Shift+Control+Option’ keys and then the power button at the same time, for 5- 10 seconds.
  3. Release all keys and buttons simultaneously. you should see the magsafe light (if orange) go green and back to orange.
  4. Press the power button to switch on your Mac as usual and boot to windows.

Ok I reset the SMC and ill monitor it for the next couple minutes to see if it makes a difference. I don't think it's just the "fans acting up" as it is in your case because the MacBook is actually generating a fair amount of heat and I know heat is the "enemy". That said I did research operating temperatures for this model and it seems between 46c - 97c is acceptable during various workloads. I noticed that running windows update almost immediately initiates the heating/fan cooling process. As I said just seems a bit odd that the machines work rate would be so high during normal/background process.. I checked the task manager and looked at the processes/usage and didnt notice anything "hogging" all the resources.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, resetting the SMC may have done the trick. I tried playing Halo CE (yes ancient game) on it and it runs fine but the fans do trip on and info notice a fair amount of heat on the top left side. I know it's not a gaming laptop but this game is 10 years old with minimal requirements so an i7 8gb Ram shouldn't have an issue?

so i did some testing using Real Temp GT 3.70 (not sure if thats an accurate measure or if that program is compatible with the haswell chipset) and while playing halo for about 15 mins or so i saw temps of 75 celcius max, which is pretty hot when calculate into farenheit but still below what Anandtech saw during there "heavy" workload test. I guess my concern is the health/longevity of the CPU, i don't want to be "over stressing/Over heating" the CPU and decreasing the life of the notebook pre-maturely.

hey 75 degrees celcius is very good. My pc reaches 95 degrees and its over a year old and still as responsive as ever. Gaming will always lower your longevity in the longrun, but as long as you play in moderation then you will get a good 5years plus from you mac i should think.. my friends had his air since 2009 and it runs amazing..

Trust me, apple quality of components is so high you will never have to worry about the health as long as you look after it and get it cleaned out/ serviced one every year or so.. 🙂
