Q: blocking cookies

can cookies be blocked from facebook and/or twitter from being stored on my computer when i have no accounts with either of them?  therefore, their sites are not being used by me and therefore, no responses would be coming into my computer from anyone else using them for themselves.

    Yes it's possible

Maintain some level of privacy/cookie tracking

If you read further down about using a hosts file addition, you can block the domain names of sites you don't want to connect to by adding the sites to block as such

    0.0.0.0 www.facebook. com

    0.0.0.0 www.twitter. com

(note, the space(s) was added to prevent this forum from turning it into links)

However it won't block the IP connections, for that you need to know the IP address of the site (easy to find out) and a graphical user interface for the OS X built in Firewall like NoobProof (or WaterRoof if your more seasoned)

I have been meaning to add how to block IP's to my User Tip, just never got around to it as it's rather dangerous for most folks to be messing around with.

If your browser blocks cookies from 'third parties & advertisers' (as in Safari - Preferences - Privacy)

then no 'cookies' will be stored from those sites in any case.

The ghostery browser extension will block much of that sort of content from even loading.
