Jul 18, 2013 11:20 PMby Jeff,Is this PCI graphics card intended to be a secondary card, used in conjunction with the primary AGP graphics card in your G5 or did you pull the AGP card? If the original AGP card was removed, you'd be much better off replacing it with an AGP 8x-compatible card, because the AGP bus has much more bandwidth than the PCI bus. Additionally, the graphics card must be programmed with a Mac ROM to function in your G5. If the Sapphire card has already had its ROM chip flashed with a Mac ROM, it should be detected and function normally. Otherwise, you'll need to do it yourself. There are web sites dedicated to this, so a search will find the instructions. Over 10 years ago, I flashed about (8) ATI (retail-boxed) Radeon 7000 PCI graphics cards for use in my older G3s, although the procedure was done in one of my PCs. The Sapphire Radeon card is referred to as "Powered by ATI," whereas ATI's own retail products are "Built by ATI." When flashing certain third-party "Powered by ATI" cards, some have smaller ROM chips and require a slightly truncated ROM file. Again, the web sites dedicated to flashing graphics cards for use in Macs will have the specifics.

Jul 19, 2013 1:11 AMby bodminbeast,I bought it from Ebay, itbwas listed as mac compatible, i also asked the seller and they said it would work in my G5, like i say it shows up in system profiler and says driver installed, the reason i got another card was that i have 2 monitors, and the card in my G5 has one DVI and one ACD ports, the ADC adaptor is very expensive so i thought id get a new graphics card instead, ive tried it on its own and with the card i already have in the machine which is AGP, im thinking now i might just go for one bigger monitor which will just be easier as ive already tried a couple of graphics cards that were meant to work in y G5

Unsupported PCI cards will show up in the System Profiler and - in your case - the driver for a "Mac-compatible" Radeon 7K card was already installed with the OS. What the System Profiler won't do is show you an error message related to incorrect ROM programming. Similar to graphics cards, the PC version of ATA controller cards installed in a Mac will show up in the System Profiler, but won't function at all. Perhaps the seller doesn't know that there's a difference between the PC version and Mac version of the same Radeon card.
