Hi there,

I have been using Home Sharing via the Remote app to contol iTunes from my 2008 Macbook, to my Apple TV, mainly with no problems.

However, I would ideally like to use Home Sharing on the Music app on my iPhone and iPad, but there have been some problems.

It has been difficut to connect - the 'Sharing' Tab on my portable devices doesn't always appear and when it does, after I select my library, the spinning wheel usually fails to go beyond halfway.  On the occasions I have been able to access my library, it is only partially there - huge chunks are missing.  This has always been the case on the iPad's Music app - only a partial selection has come up at best.  On the iphone, initially what appeared to be my entire library was available, but now I struggle for it to even connect at all, or just a partial selection shows up.

The Home Sharing feature would be ideal for me just now, as no sufficiant cloud storage option appears to be available to me yet.

Is there anything I can do to improve things?

There is also no sign of the Home Sharing tab on my Itunes sidebar.

Why not simply use the AppleTV?

Because there is no other computer you are sharing from.

You don't Home Share from your iDevices to yoru computer. You only Home Share from your computer.

As far as library not loading, reset your wifi router and turn off then on Home Sharing on all devices.

That works fine in my living room, but not in other rooms where I don't have Apple TV.  This would be fine if the remote app could stream the music through my devices, but it doesn't.

I believe it was obvious I was wanting to share from my computer to devices and not vice versa, but thank you for pointing out that a 'Sharing' tab is not meant to appear in iTunes for outgoing sharing.  I thought this may have been part of the problem.

Having gone through the process of disabling Home Sharing on my Macboock and resetting my router, before renabling, I can confirm this has brought back partial home sharing on my iPhone - for example, it believes I only have a mere 4 artists in my music library, when I have many more.  The iPad appear to be struggling to load my library at all.

I have definitely managed to get what appeared to be my entire library shared to my iPhone and partially (which is a waste of time) to my iPad, so why the different results now?

If the tedious process of having to carry out router restarts plus disabling / reenabling Home Sharing brought about success, I would sort of be able to accept it, but in my case it doesn't appear to work.  My entire library is able to be streamed (in the living from) via the Remote app to Apple TV, so why is it so difficult to send them to my two Apple devices?

What are you expecting to stream to in these othere rooms without AppleTV?

Correct. You cannot stream from iTunes to your iPad bu using the Remote Control app.

If you want to play the iTunes library that is stored on your computer through your iDevices, open the Music app, tap More and then Shared.

As before, I dont understand why you are doing it this way...

You can view your entire library by using the AppleTV. You can also control the AppleTV directly from the Remote app on your iDevice. You don't need to control iTunes on your computer.

so why is it so difficult to send them to my two Apple devices?

You cannot send library to the iDevices.

You can read the library form the iDevices.

Did you turn off then turn on Home SHaring on these iDevices?

Settings > Music (or Videos), Home Sharing. Tap your AppleID then Off the turn it back On.

The idea would be to use the Music app on my iDevices.  I mentioned Apple TV and the Remote app, because it works perfectly for me, for this purpose - the Home Sharing is working brilliantly for this purpose in my living room, where my Apple TV is stationed.  However, I'd like to use Home Sharing from my Macbook's library on my iDevices too, as they are ideal for using in my bedroom via a stereo system and my bathroom via docking station.  I have tried restarting the router and resetting Home Sharing on the macbook and iDevices, thereafter remains a problem.  The iPhone, when it does chose to display my Library, displays only a small fraction of it's contents.  This has happened before on my iPad too, though today that particular device is refusing to connect to the library at all.  It's frustrating because I have managed to see and play what appeared to be my entire Macbook's library on my iPhone's Music app on a couple of occasions before, but even after the fix you mention, I'm having limited success.

As for why I like to use the Apple TV to control the macbook (silently) with the remote app while listening on my Apple TV, well, as I understand it's the only way I'm aware of to scrobble to Last.fm, plus I like having the option of switching my macbook's audio on for simultaneous listening if I move from room to room.  (The Macbook mainly lives connected to  a stereo in another room).  Perhaps this is less relevant to the thread which, which is mainly about not having much success using Home Sharing to play the Library's entire contents on the iDevices.

When I said send, 'stream' would have been the word I was looking for.
