I want to link my radio tuner seperate to my desktop Mac to record an opera broadcast. I have a Belkin RCA Audio Cable, and I also have an iMic.

Would I get the best results connecting the cable directly into the 'audio in' port, or into the iMic and connect the USB end in of the iMic?

In GarageBand I have gone the route of New Project / Voice ; then +(create a new project) at the bottom left of the new GB window, and highlighted 'real instrument' . . . what options in 'instrument setup' should I select ?

In the 'browse' tab there are a number of selection options at the bottom ; likewise in the 'edit' tab there are a number of selection options.

Is it important to make specific selections prior to recording, or does it not matter, and one can tweak post-recording ?

I am also confused by the numerous audio level controls there are in the window : as well as one top left and one at the bottom, there is also one in the 'browse' tab, as well as an 'automatic level control' check box ! Which do I need to actively select ?

Grateful in advance for any help offered.

instead of a real instrument track create a New Basic Track, this will be an un-effected track, which is what you'd want.

no, none of GB effects are recorded:

the level controls in the mixer are only for playback, the only one that may affect the recording level, if it's enabled, is the one in Track "i"nfo:

When you say 'the only one that may affect the recording level, if it's enabled, is the one in Track "i"nfo'. Do you mean the check box 'automatic level control'.

both the checkBox as well as the slider

Is it advisable to enable it, and why does enabling it switch 'monitor' to 'off' (and why does selecting 'monitor' to 'on' automatically disable 'automatic level control')

huh! i actually don't know why it functions that way, i've never used the auto level so had never noticed that before

there's no way to advise one way or the other, the reason it's an option is because it may work great for some material, and not for other type. best advise is try it.

If I want to both save the recording on my Mac and also burn it to CD, which is the best option to select in 'Share' in the menu bar : 'send song to itunes'

if you want it automatically added to your iTunes library

'export song to disk' opens a window offering a number of options in drop down menus

uncheck the Compress checkBox and all the options will go away, creating the highest quality file

and doesn't explain what disk is being referred to.

your hard drive, SSD, external drive... it lets you save it whereever you wish

I [...] was unsettled to read one of your FAQ's referring to max 1hr 39mins for a GB project. Please tell me I have misunderstood !

read the rest of the entry, it explains how to record for longer periods

Is there a 'rule of thumb' ratio for how much decrease of BPM increases record / play time ?

it wouldn't be hard to figure out, but why bother? set it to 40 and you'll have the maximum record time
